Matcha Tea Characteristics and Benefits

Matcha is made from quality tea leaves that are shade-grown to encourage higher levels of chlorophyll and L-theanine, producing vivid green, naturally sweeter leaves. After harvesting, the stems and veins are removed to create tencha, which is then steamed and finely stone-ground into the powder we know as matcha. In the cup, matcha can range from lightly earthy and vegetal to clean, grassy, and gently nutty, depending on origin and craftsmanship. Matcha is also valued for its naturally occurring antioxidants and is often chosen for focused, calm energy, pairing moderate caffeine with the balancing effect of L-theanine.

Does matcha tea contain caffeine?

Yes - matcha naturally contains caffeine. Because you consume the whole leaf in powdered form, caffeine levels can vary widely, often ranging from around 40-170 mg per serving (about 250 ml prepared). The exact amount depends on the matcha, the quantity used, and how you prepare it.

How to make matcha?

To make matcha, whisk 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with a small splash of hot water (70-80°C) until smooth. Add more hot water (about 180-250 ml, to taste) and whisk briskly until frothy. A traditional matcha bowl and whisk work brilliantly for this method. For an iced option, add 1 teaspoon of matcha to a shaker or tightly sealed bottle, pour in cold water and ice, then shake until fully mixed and evenly suspended. Enjoy!
